The social insurance number of the deceased person must be cancelled as soon as possible after death in order to eliminate the risks of error, fraud, or identity theft. Generally, the funeral home takes care of this matter and even proceeds with cancelling the card issued by the RAMQ (Régie de l'assurance maladie du Québec).
In addition, it is important to cancel the various cards held by the deceased person, such as credit cards from financial institutions, department stores, or oil companies, as well as cheques received without rights or in the name of the deceased person instead of in the name of their estate (e.g. GST, QST, old age security).
